Officer Ella Small with JPD's Precinct 4 has been a great help with a number of code enforcement projects and has been a regular and interested participant in our monthly BIA meetings. Officer Small recently lost nearly everything in a house fire. Almost all her possessions were either burned or have suffered major smoke or water damage. If anyone wishes to donate items to her family, they would be welcome; BIA board member Matthew McLaughlin has volunteered to accept donated items and get them over to Commander Goodrum at Precinct 4, who is receiving all donations for Officer Small. To donate, drop items at Matthew's house at 1609 Lyncrest. If you want to drop items for Officer Small off at Matthew McLaughlin's house (1609 Lyncrest), please do so on SUNDAY AFTERNOON so that he can get them all together at once. If that's not convenient, you can also take them to Precinct 4 on North State Street. If you have furniture or other large items that you would like to donate, please check with Belmont Trapp who is working to coordinate that effort. Belmont's email is belmont53@aol.com
Here is a partial list of items needed:
Clothes: boys' size 14 regular and 16 regular trousers; boys' large and XL shirts; boys' size 4.5 and 5 shoes; ladies' size 10 trousers, medium shirts, and size 8.5 shoes; men's size 50 trousers, size 3XL shirts, and size 13 shoes.
Household goods: the kitchen and den were a total loss - any furniture, cooking equipment, appliances, etc. would be welcome; queen size sheets and/or mattresses; towels and other bath linens; curtains size 48" x 84" (3 sets).
Some other info from Belmont Trapp at Precinct 4's Community-Oriented Policing Group: Belmont will keep a list in case someone wants to give her big items like a couch or bed. She says, "I am sure she can accept gift cards from Wal Mart or Target as well. I would suggest that anyone who wishes to donate items to Officer Small include the sales receipt in the bag so that if she gets a duplicate of an item and needs to exchange it, she will be able to do so.

On the lost and found pets front, several items: From Joan Young: "our dog got out this morning between 9 and 1. We live on Park Avenue next to Millsaps. I have driven the neighborhood and not been able to find anyone who has seen him. He has no collar on. He is a off white shaggy dog. The breed is a soft haired wheaten terrier and he weighs about 40-45 lbs. His name is Oscar. If you have seen Oscar, please contact Joan at joanyoung.ai@gmail.com or 601-594-2913."
From Laura Christel: Found: young tabby cat in Belhaven Heights (flea collar but no other ID; very friendly). Contact Laura Christel Horlings at 601.672.4438 if this is your cat.
And, from Nora Frances McRae (nadiafaye@aol.com): “We have a really cute, friendly, golden shorthaired dog hanging around Popcorn Alley (just off Park Avenue by Millsaps). It (she?) looks like a boxer mix, young dog but also pretty skinny.” If anyone recognizes it or is interested, please let Nora Frances know.
Belhaven College students are participating in their annual MLK Community service day today - students are to mulch trees along Riverside Drive, and do some other cleanup and painting projects. Thanks, folks!
The agenda for the February meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission is below the signature block. If you have questions about any of the listed cases or if you want information about how to apply for your own COA (required for almost all exterior renovations & additions of your Belhaven home, except for changes to paint color -- ask to be sure!), please contact Biqi Zhao at bzhao@city.jackson.ms.us

Finally, a cautionary tale: all those warnings not to put your loose leaves in the gutter were serious, as neighbor Rebecca Taylor can attest: she writes, “Today I had a flood in my basement caused by a blocked street drain. The drain was blocked by leaves. When the city came out to clear it they said the clog was caused by neighbors up the hill from me who had raked their leaves into the street. The rain washed the leaves down the hill. Would it be possible to post something asking that the leaves be bagged? … I hate to inconvenience anyone, but I had (no exaggeration) a spout of water about the thickness of a finger spewing from my basement wall like something the Little Dutch Boy would stick his finger in.” So please, bag or compost your leaves or at the very least, DO NOT pile them in the gutter or street. Thanks very much.

Get the Juice: Later in January, Entergy will be trimming trees in the Greater Belhaven area. The trimming is done about every three years to clear tree branches and limbs away from electric power lines to help prevent outages during storms. The trees that are being trimmed are under power lines and are located in an easement held by Entergy. Join us for "The Juice" every second Tuesday of the month at the Greater Belhaven Neighborhood Foundation office, 954 Fortification to explain the tree-trimming process and answer questions. Also, prior to trimming, Entergy's contractor will contact each homeowner. Get the Juice starts at 7:30 a.m. at GBNF's offices at 954 Fortification Street - park at McDade's and walk up the hill to the third cottage on the north side of the street.

A very lovable white cat (fully grown, very affectionate and talkative; all white with no collar or other identification) has taken up residence in our back yard. Neighbors on our street tell us that he was left behind when a renter moved away recently. He's got a great personality, seems to get along fine with kids, and would like to be friends with our current cat (but she's not having any). At age 16, our kitty isn't ready for a new sibling. If you would be interested in giving the white cat a home, please reply to this email address
At the request of an "ecologically confused" neighbor, here's a link to the City of Jackson's Solid Waste division with information about curbside recycling, hazardous waste drop-off facility hours, and more:
http://www.city.jackson.ms.us/government/publicworks/solidwaste
Curbside recycling pickup is THIS Friday.
If you bought a few too many white lights for your tree this year (or if you're shopping for more at the post-holiday sales), please consider donating a few extra strands of white lights to GBNF for use during Bright Lights, Belhaven Nights. Our annual street party uses thousands of white lights - the more the better. Please drop your new or gently used but untangled and wrapped lights off at 954 Fortification Street during business hours, or call 601-352-8850 for more information.

"Zip Code Rubbish Collection Starts in 39201 and 39202 on Monday, Dec 17, 2007. The Solid Waste Division will begin picking up rubbish items on Monday, December 17, 2007 in the 39201 and 39202 ZIP code. To ensure pick-up, residents in the area are encouraged to place material at the curbside by 6:00 a.m. Items accepted in the Rubbish Collection Program include Appliances (stoves, refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners), furniture, televisions, DVD players (and other electronic items), mattresses, carpet, toys, building materials and tires. Residents are requested NOT to place household garbage, liquid waste, household hazardous waste (paints, oil, gas, etc.), auto parts, junk vehicles, limbs or tree cuttings, or computers/monitors on the curb. These items will not be picked up. For more information on compliance regulations or if you have any questions, contact the Solid Waste Division at 601-960-1193.
Solid Waste also advises that the leaf vacuum truck has ALREADY BEEN THROUGH Belhaven - yes, that's right, they picked up leaves in our neighborhood in late November. So please, don't pile those leaves up by the curb or in the gutter - they will not be vacuumed, but instead will end up clogging storm sewers and drains. Please bag or compost your leaves rather than putting them in the gutter or on the curb.
