This area we refer to as "Belhaven" is one of just a few inner city areas to be accepted into the Mississippi Main Street Program. Usually, small towns are the target, but Belhaven and the Fondren area have recently been included.

The Mississippi Main Street program is an economic development program based in historic preservation focused on developing certain areas through a four-point approach: organization, promotions, design and economic restructuring. The Mississippi Main Street Association leads the nation in program success, and it is a designated partner of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Mississippi Development Authority. The Greater Belhaven Neighborhood Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charged with long-range planning for the Greater Belhaven Neighborhood, which includes the historic Belhaven and Belhaven Heights neighborhoods. The Foundation focuses on historic preservation, economic restructuring, green space enhancement, and safety. Greater Belhaven is an official Mississippi Urban Neighborhood Main Street community.
